How to pull SEC filings and UK company records into your AI agent

By Alan Lui · Published · Last updated

Give your agent two apifare capabilities. sec-edgar returns a US company's latest SEC filings with direct document links, and companies-house searches the UK register and returns company profiles and officers. Neither needs a provider key or account of your own.

Copy this line to your agent once apifare is connected:

Use apifare's sec-edgar capability with {"company": "AAPL", "form": "10-K", "limit": 3} and list each filing's date with its document link.

What does sec-edgar return?

Pass company (a ticker such as AAPL, or a numeric CIK), optionally a form type ("10-K", "10-Q", "8-K" and so on) and a limit from 1 to 20 (5 by default).

It returns the company (CIK, ticker, name and industry) and its most recent filings. For each filing you get the form, the filing date, the accession number, a description when EDGAR has one, and a direct link to the document. The data is US public domain, from SEC EDGAR.

What does companies-house return?

One capability, three modes, set with type:

Do I need an EDGAR or Companies House API key?

No. Both capabilities run on apifare's side, and your balance pays each one's listed price per call. Per-call prices are on /capabilities.

What do I have to show next to the data?

Both results carry an attribution line: keep it next to any data you display. SEC results say "Data from SEC EDGAR (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission)". Companies House results say "Contains Companies House data © Crown copyright".

How does a due-diligence agent chain these?

For a UK company, it searches by name, takes the company_number from the best match, then pulls the profile and the officers with that number. For a US company, it lists the 10-K or 8-K filings and opens the document links it needs.

Research agents loop, and a runaway loop is a bill. Every call is debited from one prepaid balance with a hard stop at zero. Per-agent daily and monthly caps, allowlists and a kill switch are checked before a call is dispatched, failed provider calls are refunded, and every call lands on a signed audit chain you can export. More: give your agent a budget.

For agents: the exact calls

  1. Over MCP (apifare-mcp): call_api with slug sec-edgar and params {"company": "AAPL", "form": "10-K"}. Not sure of the slug? search_apis finds it.
  2. Over HTTP: POST https://apifare.com/v1/call/sec-edgar with Authorization: Bearer $APIFARE_TOKEN and the JSON body {"company": "AAPL", "form": "10-K"}.
  3. UK register: the same call with slug companies-house and {"company": "Tesco"}. Then take a company_number from the matches and call again with {"company": "<company_number>", "type": "officers"}.
  4. Keep the attribution line from each result next to any data you show your human.
  5. On HTTP 402 the balance is empty: relay the body's human_readable line to your human, wait for the top-up, then retry the same call. Every other error and its fix: the error catalog.

For humans: set it up

  1. Connect your agent. Paste set up https://apifare.com/SKILL.md into it: it gets a key ($5 of calls free), writes its own config and makes a first call. Or get a key at /start and follow your client's setup guide.
  2. Ask. Show me Apple's latest 10-K filings, or Who are the officers of <UK company>?

FAQ

Can I look up a company by ticker?

Yes. Pass a ticker such as AAPL, or a numeric CIK.

Which SEC forms can I filter by?

Any form type EDGAR uses, for example "10-K", "10-Q" or "8-K". Leave form out to get the latest filings of every type.

How many results come back?

Five by default for both capabilities. Set limit from 1 to 20.

How do I get a UK company’s officers?

Search by name first, take the company_number from the result, then call companies-house with that number and type "officers".

Do I need to credit the source?

Yes. Both results carry an attribution line; keep it next to any data you display.

Give this to your agent

set up https://apifare.com/SKILL.md — and it takes it from there: key, config, first call. $5 of calls free.

No agent open right now? ① Get a key — $5 of calls free, then ② give it to your agent (setup guides).
